Alabama
Alabama routes unclaimed and abandoned motor vehicle cases through the Alabama Department of Revenue's MyDMV portal rather than a paper-first DMV process. As of October 1, 2026, ALDOR says the mandatory five-day waiting period for reporting to ALDOR after towing was eliminated, while the core 48-hour abandonment triggers remain on the main procedures page.

- When a vehicle counts as abandoned
- Under ALDOR's current procedures, a vehicle is treated as unclaimed/abandoned when it is left unattended on a public road for more than 48 hours, left without consent on private or other public property for more than 48 hours, or not reclaimed after repair within 48 hours of completion or the agreed redemption date.
- Removing one from private property
- A private property owner or other person in possession uses ALDOR's Unclaimed/Abandoned portal to report the vehicle, and local removal or nuisance enforcement may also run through city police or code-enforcement channels.
- Getting title to an abandoned vehicle
- After portal reporting, notice, and public-auction steps are completed, ALDOR says the portal generates the abandoned vehicle bill of sale used to apply for an Alabama certificate of title, and some purchasers may need a surety-bond title.

- Start with ALDOR's MyDMV unclaimed/abandoned vehicle portal and keep every notice, publication, and portal output.
- If your ownership proof is still incomplete after purchase, check whether ALDOR requires a surety-bond title through a designated agent.
- For neighborhood complaints inside a city, also file with the city code-enforcement or police reporting channel so the vehicle can be investigated locally.
